Soda Cuts
Wednesday, February 8, 2012 - 7:30pm

Dave "Sleepy Cuts" Fallon and Robbie "Soda Jerk" Epp have come together as "Soda Cuts" due to a mutual love of all things funk. Dave has been addicted to scratching since he picked up his first set of turntables in '04, and addicted to funk since his ears first heard it. Stuck in Saskatchewan with a pair of decks and a handful of beat up battle records, he chopped it up for fun; it wasn't until he moved to Kelowna and hooked up with the Electrofunk Collective in '06 that he made the move to performing live, cutting it up in the clubs & at parties. Dave has since taken his game to the next level by combining visual scratching with his turntablist skills, lighting up the screens and the speakers with Fresh Baked Dj’s. Robbie cut his teeth on vinyl back in '06 in Yellowknife where the sounds of electronic music were no where to be found. Armed with a box of house records and a love for the music, he meticulously learned the art of djing with 2 of his best friends and formed a group called Bushleague Dj’s. With no electronic music scene in the north, they decided to create their own and have been rocking clubs and parties ever since. Now located in Vancouver, Dave and Robbie have teamed up and are excited to show people why they love this music so much. Expect to hear a mix of hip hop, ghetto funk, and breaks.

Martyr and Pistol started as a few friends playing old Country and Bluegrass music. After many sunday nights at the Barfly honing their craft, they decided to make the leap to original compositions and a full electric band. In the two years that they've been at it, Martyr and Pistol have come a long way, evolving a solid, straight up country rock sound. Guided by the original compositions and soul-torn voice of Ben Arsenault, the melodic and creative leads of fiddler Rafe and guitarist Gab and tied together with the comfy rythm of Eric on the drums and Will on bass, Martyr and Pistol is a solid unit, laying down a good sound that lies somewhere between Merle Haggard and The Rolling Stones. Known for their excellent live shows, they have appeared at several excellent venues in the Montreal plateau area, such as Divan Orange, L'Esco, Casa Del Popolo, The Green Room, The Barfly and Le Cagibi. They have been honoured to share the stage with other great artists on the Montreal music scene, such as Li'l Andy, Yonder Hill, Maica Mia, The Johnny Cash Machine, Benny Blanco, Joe Grass and The Unsettlers. Martyr and Pistol recorded their debut album in December 2008 and are looking forward to releasing it in the fall of 2009 and playing shows throughout Eastern Canada and the States to promote it. "Bluegrass Night at the Barfly brought us together, love will tear us apart.

CMW Showcase Night

Shalini
Sunday, February 12, 2012 - 7:00pm

Shalini is a singer, a songwriter, a pianist and a composer. Her style is best described as Indie, Baroque and Melodramatic Pop. Shalini is an upstream fish.

Born in Vancouver to her Papa, the European-Car doctor, and her mother, a religious actress at the Hindu temple, Shalini was raised in one big house with two black gates.

Since the age of 3, Shalini has played the piano, written many lyrics, sung many songs on many stages, and taken a great interest in studying the arts. Her most adored subjects include Bharata Natyam (an Indian classical dance), theatre, songwriting, voice, classical music and music composition.

At age 7, Shalini composed her first full piano piece called “I Wonder Why” – by that time, she had become the youngest to join the harmony section of her elementary school choir, and singing solos led by renowned choir instructor Hans Fenger (Langley School Music Project).

By age 8, Shalini had learned and memorized over 100 classic songs by artists the likes of John Lennon, David Bowie and The Beach Boys. Several years later, she was honoured with a school-wide academic award in music with heartfelt words by Mr. Fenger.

Throughout high school, Shalini continued to flourish. She performed in plays and received pageant titles, including Miss Top Fundraiser Canada by raising over $1,000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association. She also came in as first runner-up in the Miss Teen BC swimsuit competition. But she was yet to be satisfied – to develop her inner artist, Shalini found inspiration by experimenting with Jazz, Surf, Indian, Electronic, Rock, Contemporary and Classical musical styles.

Life as a young adult proved to have its challenges, but each turn of the card revealed a new experience. Shipped off to an accounting program, she found herself dropping out as music beckoned Shalini back. Fury in the house with the two black gates said its goodbyes to her as she ran away for a time, only to return to try again because she learned that living alone out there was no place for a young girl. Shalini found a job in a tall downtown tower, at the very top floor where she became quite adept at fixing the photocopier. The music kept calling and balance became necessary; Shalini returned to finish her schooling in numbers, and the practice of yoga and vegetarianism were more than ever important. Shalini was evolving.

In addition to pursuing her goal of becoming a concert pianist at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Shalini has focused her efforts on releasing her album entitled “Book of Dreams”. The EP was recorded with local producer Winston Hauschild (Nay Jay, Hannah Georgas, Wanting Qu) and is scheduled to release in December 2011.

In the very near future, Shalini’s goals include (but are not limited to) being on rotation on CBC Radio and performing live at the Juno Awards.

BDIAMOND with DJ Denise
Sunday, February 12, 2012 - 8:00pm

http://www.myspace.com/djdenys/photos

B DIAMOND. Known as the underground R&B king or some may call him “DIAMOND IN THE RUFF” or simply “B DIAMOND the legend”. You may have seen him performing longside acts like LIL FLIP, YUNG JOC, THE GAME, E40, ICE T, ICE CUBE, SNOOP DOGG, FABOLOUS and KC & JOJO and that's just to name a few.
B DIAMOND has been making music waves all the way from New Orleans LA (his native land) where he grew up on some of the roughest streets where if you made it off the front steps in the early 90's you were considered a “G”. B DIAMOND came to Vancouver BC Canada, which he likes to call "RAIN DROP CITY", in the mid 90's with a well known R&B group called High Quality Band. After leaving the band to work on his own music, B DIAMOND in 1998, dropped his first single “Same Old Game” under the independent record label DACRIM RECORDS. That track made B DIAMOND the first solo male R&B artist to have a song played on a major radio station in Vancouver BC and the first to have a video played on Much Music. With his label and management team, at the time not seeing eye to eye, his label and management team decided to part ways but he didn't let that stop him!
In 2005 B DIAMOND recorded the song “Let's Party Naw” that featured “Concise the Black Knight”, a local hip/hop artist from Vancouver BC. “Lets Party Naw” was entered into a local radio station's battle of the beats. B DIAMONDS song won 3 consecutive nights in a row with making history no other artist had done this "land slide wins" but the radio station decided to change the rules of the battle to 4 wins the day after B DIAMOND should have won the battle. The radio station gave the win to a R Kelly, Ashanti, and Ja rule song. B DIAMOND didn't stop there. He started working with every local artist across the U.S.A. to Canada. Artists like, Concise the Black Knight, Check Mate, The Camp, PTown Mo, Vic Vodka, PMAN, Red1, Baldy Loc, OCP Crew, Kanabliss, Trajikk, The Titans, Haze entertainment, Crown604, Keep6ix and the list is continuing to grow to date. "When you need a tight hook, B DIAMONDS the man you gotta call and that’s that". B DIAMOND has been compared to some of today's top acts such as R Kelly, JAHEIM and Ginuwine but he's not just a singer. After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans In 2005, BDiamond returned to Vancouver Canada and co found and became a member of an underground movement that supports local artists called "THE KOALLITION", B DIAMOND formed a hip/hop group of five members named "DEM BLOCK BOYZ". B DIAMOND produced and recorded a mix tape "The Blockz is Watchin" which featured Dem Block Boyz. The cd was named "one of the best local underground mix tapes of 2006". To this day people still ask about that cd and the group. The group and B DIAMOND performed at every local venue across rain drop city. A year later, B DIAMOND parted ways with DEM BLOCK BOYZ due to conflicts within the group. “They were just too good, too strong minded to work together as a group”. B DIAMOND continued as a solo R&B artist. In 2007, B DIAMOND along with his new management team Jenn&Juice, formed a R&B tour called "POP N BOTTLES" which featured B DIAMOND along with some of Vancouver’s hottest acts. In 2008, B DIAMOND (with help from his team Rasta Moves, Jenn&Juice management and Mo Suntzu) promoted a mix tape called “The Guerilla Movement Vol.2 Play list” which was hosted by DJ Kay Slay. B DIAMOND, with more features on this mix tape then any other artist, helped make this cd one of the illest mix tapes of 2008! Having said all that…. In 2009 B DIAMOND prepared a tour across Canada and the U.S.A. and still going today so keep your ears and eyes open for the coming of a rising legend we like to call The King of R&B, B DIAMOND.
Next moves Best Of the Best, 2010 Olympics Performance, South Africa Tour!
Stay tune!! 2011 is going be MAAAD!!
B Diamond is #20 on Reverbnation Charts for top R&B in New orleans

Two Apple Tobacco
Sunday, February 12, 2012 - 9:00pm

Like with many bands, founding members Daniel Deorksen and Jordan Kling met in high school, but not in the classrooms or hallways – in the senior jazz band. They formed an alliance and began jamming every week with a rotating cast of musicians. They developed a style uniquely their own, mixing rock and funk with elements of jazz, blues, folk, Latin and hip-hop.

Before long, they crystallized the lineup with soul-jazz vocalist Jessica Harvey, rock vocalist and flautist Courtney Lancaster and veteran session drummer Vern Shewchuk. The ensemble is frequently joined, on stage and in the studio, by saxophonist Dominic Conway and star violinist Phyllis Ho.

With Dan, Jess and Courtney being actors and playwrights in their own right, it has only been natural to incorporate theatrics into their live performances. In July 2009, the Two Apple Tobacco began a long-awaited workshop of an original rock musical based on their tunes: Horribly Sunny. In the spring of 2012, the group will release their first full-length album: a pan-apocalptic rock opera entitled Squinter’s Paradise.

Two Apple Tobacco has gained quite the reputation for their dynamic live show. Each of the members has an exuberant and energetic stage presence and a high level of musicianship that captivates audiences. Every show, by tradition, the band covers a song by the artist who has possibly been their greatest inspiration: Frank Zappa. Two Apple Tobacco is definitely a band to watch out for in the coming year.

Pomme
Sunday, February 12, 2012 - 10:00pm

"Pomme" is the fruit of passion, curiosity and exploration. Between Toronto, Vancouver and Tel Aviv, Singer-songwriter Yael Akron, worked with Producer Shai C Sivan, and Film composer Adrian Ellis to craft the self-titled EP, released in May 2011.

Akron's melodic alternative ballads take an interesting twist, supported by Sivan's urban-cold, somewhat-industrial production. "New Frontiers" and "Silver Lining" are joined by Ellis's cinematic 3D instrumentations.

Upon settling in Vancouver, Akron started playing with Vancouver based musicians: guitarist Ryan Drolet, Keyboardist- JJ Wragler, Bass player- Russ Mackenzie and drummer Dimi Karabov, turning studio Pomme into a live and kicking act, creating an acclaim in the local scene.

Pomme have recently won the October Nimbus Showcase Event and will be soon entering the studio at Nimbus to record new songs.

Christina Martin
Wednesday, February 15, 2012 - 8:00pm

The easy comparisons: Kathleen Edwards – Failer | Lucinda Williams – Cart Wheels on a Gravel Road | Wilco – A Ghost is Born
Award winning artist. A Female Tom Petty with Folk, Pop and alt-Country sensibility. “An exquisite voice.” Americana UK
For nearly a decade Christina Martin has been on a musical journey. From recording her debut album Pretty Things (2002) in Austin, Texas, to opening for Wilco, it was clear that music was her path. It was not long after she returned home to Halifax, Nova Scotia she started playing the café/bar circuit and met esteemed musician/producer Dale Murray. On a whim they recorded Two Hearts (2008), an album that won her Pop Recording of the Year at the 2009 East Coast Music Awards, as well as two Nova Scotia Music Awards for Female Artist of the Year and Pop Recording of the Year in 2008.
Martin and Murray teamed up in 2010 to produce I Can Too which features guest appearances by Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor. With her ethereal voice, tracks like “I Fear I Am,” conjures up classic rock jangles and the rhythmic sway of Roy Orbison. “Daisy,” draws on Tom Petty’s nostalgic narrative-driven approach to the craft, while Murray’s lap steel on “Hello,” echoes the melodic slide- guitar playing of George Harrison. But its title track, “I Can Too,” that is the album’s pinnacle. This song opens with Martin almost whispering her hearts confessions, while Murray’s instrumentation slowly builds layers among Martin’s soaring vocals. The song embodies the sentiment of the record; its bold, rhythmic, vulnerable and inspirational.
Since the release of Two Hearts (2008), Martin has toured extensively, making the long trek across Canada and throughout the United States, as well as crossing the Atlantic touring in Ireland. Her songs have made their way into films, including Sex Traffic (2004) and The Best Years (2009). She is currently the Artist in Residence in Halifax, NS for Geriatric Medical Research at Dalhousie University, writing songs about Alzheimer’s and those affected by the disease. Martin most recently released her fourth album, a live acoustic recording called A House Concert, and she is recording her fifth album in the Fall 2011 and touring Germany and Netherlands in November and December 2011.
Festival Showcasing: Stan Rogers Folk Festival (Canso, NS 2009), North American Folk Alliance (Memphis, TN 2009), Canada Music Week (Toronto, ON 2009/2010/2011), Atlantic Film Festival (Halifax, NS 2008/2009/2011), Vancouver Winter Olympics (Vancouver, BC 2010), Canada Winter Games (Halifax, NS 2011), Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival (Belfast Ireland 2010), Trout Forest Music Festival (Ear Falls, ON 2010), Parliament Hill Canada Day (Ottawa July 1, 2010).
• Opened for Wilco, Matt Mays, Cuff The Duke, Josh Ritter, Joel Plaskett, Jimmy Rankin, Stephen Fearing and more. • Winner- 2009 Pop Record of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards (For Two Hearts). • Winner- 2008 Pop/Rock album of the Year and Female Artist Recording of the Year at Nova Scotia Music Awards (Two Hearts).
• Total of seven East Coast Music Award Nominations and six Music Nova Scotia Award Nominations over three years.

Dino DiNicolo
Wednesday, February 15, 2012 - 9:30pm

Dino DiNicolo has been playing music all his life. He started on the electric organ and later left it behind. To the amazement of many, the simple electronic grooves lingered, leaving a lasting impression and early fuel for the rhythmic master. As the electric bass developed into an extension of his hands and his voice a rhythmic center of its own, Dino DiNicolo became a master musician with a groove so deep that it moves the mind, the body and the soul. Musically, Dino has captivated listeners around the world. With his humility, innate charisma and honest good-looks, he leaves a mark wherever he performs. His career has taken him to the countries of Hawaii, Japan, Grand Cayman and New Zealand and across the continents of Europe and North America. Those people who have heard his music are always wanting more.
He grooves comfortably in many styles of music and has been a contributor to a variety of projects. As a performer, session player and composer, he has worked with – EMI Publishing Canada, Supertonic, Uno Mas, John Parr, Danielle Herbert, Riley and the Rise, Melanie Dekker, Vancouver’s own The Town Pants and Sherry St. Germain. Dino has also forayed into the movie industry. In addition playing jazz with Michael Moriarty of the show Law and Order. Dino enjoyed the experience of playing a role in the Disney TV show So Weird. His song “Nothing to Fear” was used in a TV pilot Snug as a Bug. He is enjoying the completion of Beautiful a thirteen song CD of original music. Recently he can be seen going to and from the post office notifying festivals all around the world that he wants to play. Krystle Dos Santos
Friday, February 17, 2012 - 10:00pm

“Imagine a world, a world where freedom is power. We feel free when we escape, even if it be but from the frying pan into the fire. Freedom is never given by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed.”

Award winning singer/songwriter, Krystle Dos Santos, has created a world that parallels our own in her sophomore release, Fame Fatale. With songwriting references to the struggling music industry, consumerism and changing perceptions of love in our current society, Dos Santos has articulated an epic tale of power, love and redemption. The haunting melodies of the track “DisFunk” introduce the creation of the many cyborg assassin units who execute MasterControl’s orders, immediately engaging you into the inner workings of this corrupt society.

Combining Dos Santos’ versatile vocal prowess and songwriting skills, along side producer KazMega’s haunting and addictive beats, Fame Fatale is a cult classic in the making. Speaking to many current social conventions, Dos Santos’ sophomore offering is everything from a break-up album, to a fist-pumping soundtrack for a night out on the town. Captivating interludes navigate you through the story driving you to experience the hunt for the femme fatale along side her. Carving out a niche in the ever growing electro-soul genre, including artists such as the Janelle Monae, Gnarls Barkley (Cee-Lo Green) and Little Dragon, Fame Fatale offers a unique journey to the listener with live instrumentation, dancy electro beats and a storyline and heroine that gives you more than just a world of singles to grasp onto.

The creative powerhouse duo explains that the album, “is supposed to take the listener on a journey. It’s meant to get your heart racing and really feel the adventure and battle the main character, Unit 9, is experiencing. Unit 9 represents strong women, independent musicians, or whatever modern role you place her in, creating a universal character that almost anyone can relate to. She’s fighting all of our modern day battles.” Dos Santos and KazMega plan on supplementing the project with graphic novel webisodes, 1930’s style radio drama’s and much more – “We want this to become a cult classic with a broad following, from music lovers to comic book fanatics and everyone in between.”

Sometimes you just know when you aren’t doing what you’re supposed to be doing. For Jason Alcott that moment came in May of 2009 after a few too many sleepless nights.

Starting from scratch learning to play the keys, studying voice and songwriting has brought us to Jason’s first three fully produced songs. Each song paints a picture and led to the three song ep being titled ‘Something Like a Photograph’. The songs are available as a free download at www.jasonalcott.com

Merge - Acoustically Speaking
Tuesday, February 21, 2012 - 10:00pm

Born as the antithesis between David Anthony’s acoustic self titled project and his previous tenure at the helm of edgy rock act Suspect, MERGE emerges as a symbiotic patron of popular music.

After exploring the hard rock realm with his CFOX Seeds winning group Suspect (sharing the stage with many notable acts such as Nickelback, Green Day, Billy Talent and Finger Eleven), David touched upon his melodic roots with his David Anthony Project. Within a short while, David felt it was time to touch on his rock roots again.
Teaming up with local solo artist and frequent acquaintance Steve McMullen in late 2009, the two formed MERGE and began mixing ideas and styles immediately. With a common goal and a genuine bond, Dave and Steve found their writing styles to compliment each other. Within three months, MERGE had a collection of original songs ready for production.

Claiming to have a pop sound that resembles British influence and a rock sound reminiscent of classic North American stadium headliners such as Bon Jovi and Springsteen, singer David Anthony says, “MERGE is all about rock and roll, melody and the concept of collaboration.”

This statement stands true in Merge’s debut record “Falling Modern” wherein a handful of co-writes are noted. Experts like Brian Howes (Hinder) and Jeff Dawson (the mastermind producer behind Daniel Powter‘s smash hit “Bad Day”) assist on two of the tracks. “We are all huge music fans” David begins. “To us the most important thing is realizing the quality of a good song and being able to properly reproduce that. We feel that as long as we can do a song justice and give it the respect it deserves, then we should try to do everything we can to be involved in it’s creation.”

The MERGE live show is also a testament to the character of the members. Utilizing multimedia in form of video, MERGE ensures that each live show remains memorable to any audience delivering energy, appeal and presence. Most notably with ambitious newcomers Mac White on drums and Warren Steckly on bass.
Coming from different backgrounds but sharing roots in Vancouver, the members of Merge are happy to admit that their music has brought them together and has aided in their becoming of friends. Singer David Anthony adds, “We can only hope that the people we meet along the way and the fans we make will feel the same as we do with MERGE. It’s really all about sharing that common ground and loving music!”

Welcome to the music of MERGE.

About Santa Lucia LFR

Like a multi-ethnic gathering of friends, this seven member band has created a sound that evokes the early days of Latin Funk (Santana, War, etc.), while adding their own blend of Rock and Funk grooves. This addictive combination of Nuyorican Boogaloo, West Coast Funk and the ever present Cuban grooves engulfs the stage with monstrous horns and bass, funky breaks, polyrhythmic beats and furious lyrics in English and Spanish.

In 2001, Santa Lucia recorded their first 5 song EP with producer Darryl Nuedorf (Sarah McLachlan, Neko Case).

2005 brought a Western Canada Music Awards nomination for Best Children’s Recording, for the song “The Hero Inside” (2004) penned for the TV cartoon series Cackleberries.

In 2006, Santa Lucia released their second full length album, “The Streets / Las Calles” with legendary producer Larry Anschell (Nickelback, Pearl Jam) from Turtle Recording Studios in White Rock, BC Canada. Santa Lucia successfully supported “The Streets / Las Calles” in 2007-2008 with countless west coast dates and major open air festivals including; Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival, as well as many out of town festivals including The Ness Creek Music Festival in Saskatchewan, Folk on the Rocks Festival in Yellowknife NWT, Victoria Ska Festival and many more.

CBC Radio gave the first single “Lupita” heavy rotation, with the band performing a live show across Canada hosted by one of Canada’s best known news personalities Gloria Makarenko and “On the Coast” radio host Prya Ramu.

Recently, Santa Lucia LFR has refined its stage skills opening for many USA and International touring acts such as Ozomatli, Yerba Buena, Los Mococos, The Skatalites and Maxi Priest.

2010 brings with it countless tour dates with bigger audiences, a greater following of fans, and a return to the studio to record the follow up to 2006’s “The Streets / Las Calles”
